Many of our dogs come from situations where they were neglected and abused or abandoned and, like their human counterparts, find it difficult to form relationships and establish trust. The psychological damage causes them to shy away from humans, which in turn makes them less likely to be adopted. Prison programs help the dogs learn to interact with both humans and other dogs in a structured setting, with none of the violent episodes from their previous lives. People often adopt dogs expecting them to know or easily learn basic commands such as sitting, good manners and even alerting their humans when they need to be let outside. Unfortunately, when they discover the dogs aren’t learning quickly enough, many dogs are returned multiple times where they can linger for months looking for their forever home. Both the humans and the dogs that participate will often have similar histories of abandonment, abuse and neglect. Dogs want nothing more than to please their owners, and by pairing them with their human counterparts, they learn the skills and behaviours necessary to be adopted and retained.
